Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why are you doing this?
What better way to see the West than from the back of a horse? For our rider, this journey is a personal test -- her own version of climbing Mt. Everest. It's also a way to experience Nevada's wilderness and beauty, and show the world what mustangs can do. While the issue of wild horses in the West is a contentious one, hopefully through the ride we can help raise awareness and encourage adoption. There are thousands of beautiful mustangs in holding facilities across the country ready to be adopted.

  • Where does the money raised go?
Proceeds from the Nevada Discovery Ride benefit the Wild Horse Preservation League, a non-profit organization based out of Dayton, Nevada. Funds will help support their mission of helping wild horses, whether that is through adoption efforts or through government policy. For more information on the WHPL and what they do, visit www.wildhorsepl.org.

  • Who is funding the ride?
Naturally, a ride of this magnitude requires a lot of supplies and time. This ride is funded entirely by our solo
rider, Samantha. Trail support is being offered by Nevada Trail Expeditions and Ted Oxborrow, the state coordinator for the ADT. We are working to secure corporate sponsors to help subsidize some of the supplies needed for the ride. If you'd like to help with supplies, please contact us! We certainly need it and would appreciate it!

  • How will you ensure the animals safety?
We will ride for 6 days and rest every 7th day to make sure that all the animals are sound. Any lameness/injuries will immediately cause the ride to halt. Sage will wear Renegade boots, and Bella will wear Ruff Wear boots.

  • How will you ensure rider safety?
The majority of the Nevada portion of the American Discovery Trail is easily accessible to major roadways, but some of the route is remote back country. We will carry a satellite tracking device that also has the ability to send a coordinate of our location to Google Maps every 10 minutes. Anyone will be able to see where we are by logging into this website. We will rendezvous with someone on our road crew almost everyday.
